Notes from a first-time Ring-goer
My review of the Met Opera’s third Ring cycle:
The cast:
Incomparable: Bryn Terfel
Sehr gut: Eva Marie Westbroek, Stephanie Blythe, Hans-Peter König, Patricia Bardon
Not that good but somehow she pulled it off: Deborah Voigt
Wish they’d been better: Robert Brubaker, Stephen Gould
Best act: Act 3 of Walkure. Runners-up: Act 2 of Walkure, Act 3 of Siegfried
Scenes where I gave in and dozed off: Loge gets a demo of the Tarnhelm; Siegfried swears the oath on Hagen’s spear.
Best Lepage moment: The descent into Nibelheim
Worst Lepage moment: The Valkyries ride the teeter-totters
Questions I don’t know the answer to: Couldn’t Wagner think of anything better than a love potion? Am I supposed to feel sad when Siegfried gets a spear in the back? What was the Met horn section drinking this week?
Overall: a great experience. Walkure, I’ll see you again soon.
